Qualifying for Rental Assistance

Qualifying for Rental Assistance

To qualify for housing assistance, a family’s household income must not exceed the Annual Income Guidelines as set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). And Its a Requirement that one has a current copy of the credit report to show that they are unable to get financing through other means or have marginal credit thus eliminating them from getting a conventional mortgage or home loan.

In addition to falling within income limits, adults must be able to provide valid identification and proof of US citizenship. You will also need to provide your social security number and disclose your income and assets. Finally, your local housing authority will run a criminal background check. If you are on the sex offender registry or have a record of crimes that should land you on the registry, you cannot qualify for Section 8 housing or rental assistance. If you you have been convicted of other crimes, you might be denied assistance but can usually appeal the decision.

Before requesting assistance, make sure you meet minimum requirements. Here you can check your criminal record. It is recommended that you run your background check regardless of whether you’ve been convicted of a crime, as state and government agencies often have errors in their databases.

Finally, to verify that you fall within income limits, click here and choose your state. If you meet the requirements for your area, contact your local agency to complete your paperwork.

If you feel that you qualify for the Section 8 program then your next step will be to contact your local Housing Authority and see if their Wait List is accepting applications. If they are, it is at that time you may be required to give them your proof of income.

If you are not sure who to contact, go to our Home Page, click on your state and that will take you to a list of agencies in your area.

            Thanks,
            Shari

You will need to provide them that information if they request it from you.

As far as checking your status, you will also need to contact them as we are not affiliated with any agency.
Sometimes they will post updates on their website so you could also check there.

        1. Hi Shardae,

That is a great question. Each Housing Authority is different as to how they manage their wait list therefore, to move up is very difficult.
Have you looked into other programs they offer that you may qualify for that may not have such a long wait?

          Shari

I’m not exactly sure what you are asking.

We are not affiliated with any Housing Agency so I can’t take that information from you.
Please be sure to get in touch with them so you can secure your place on the wait list.

I hope this answered your question.
      Shari

    1. Hi Lisa,

Waiting can be the hardest part of this process. Please be patient.
Usually the agency you applied through will notify you either by email, or letter that they have received your application and if you qualify for the Wait List.
Every Housing Authority is different on how long their response time can be.
I would suggest you stay in contact with them just to be sure they received your application.
The most important thing I can tell you is if you move or change your contact information let them know immediately.
Because the wait time can be so long, some people forget to do this if they have to move or change email addresses.

      I wish you luck!
      Shari

    1. Cynthia,

I need for you to be more specific? Are you online trying to apply or has someone emailed you asking for income verification?

      Shari

    2. Cynthia,

Again, you need to be more clear as I’m not certain what you are referring to?
Are you talking about this site? Or something else?

      Shari

    1. Trend,

We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority.
If you are in need of help with housing you will have to contact the Local Housing Authority in your area.
They may have different programs you can qualify for.
If you are not certain how to contact them, please go to our home page where you will find the map. Click on your state, that will take you to a list of Housing Authorities in your area.
There you will find their contact information, the status of their Section 8 Wait List as well as their contact information.

      I hope this helps,
      Shari

    1. Rochelle,

Have you already completed a pre-application?
If so you will need to contact the agency you applied through.
Every agency is a little different so it would be best to get in touch with them.
Some like you to make an appointment, others you can just mail or email it in.
Again, I would definitely get in touch with them to make sure they have everything they need so you can get a spot on the wait list.

      Thanks,
      Shari

  5. Hello,

I’m currently receiving $503 a month through tca. I am in a position where it’s urgent that I find housing for me and my child asap because I will not have anywhere to stay in the next month or so. I’ve reached out to multiple shelters where I was turned down due to unavailable space. I would like to know where I am on the waiting list.

    Thank you.

    1. Shadaera,

I apologize but we are not affiliated with any Housing Authority so I am unable to give you that information.
You can contact the agency you applied through and they may be able to tell you where you are on their list.
They may also have other housing programs/emergency housing that you would qualify for.

      I hope this helps,
      Shari

    1. Malinda,

Every Housing Authority is different. Most will have you complete the pre-application with a few general questions to see if you qualify.
Then, when your name reaches the top of the list they will need to verify your income and other information.
Again, this is usually how it works, but all agencies are a little different.
I would suggest you contact the agency you applied through and make sure that you have submitted everything you need to make sure you are on the wait list.

      Hope this helps,
      Shari

  6. Hi I’m having trouble getting my credit score to complete application. I’m not sure if I am on the wait list also I lost user ID and password is there anything you can do to help me complete the application process ty

    1. Hi Daniel,

We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority so I’m not able to help you with completing your application.
You will need to contact the agency you started applying through. They may be able to help you re-set your password as well as complete your application.

      Good Luck!
      Shari

    1. Hi Gregory,

You will need to check with the agency that you applied with.
We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority so I don’t have that kind of information.
Most agencies will email you or send you a letter letting you know if you have qualified for their Wait List.
If you haven’t heard from them you may want to reach out and make sure they don’t need anything further from you.

      Hope this helps,
      Shari

    1. Hi Earnest,
If you feel that you qualify for the Section 8/Housing Choice program you need to contact your Local Housing Authority.
We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority or Government Program.
If you are not sure how to contact or apply, go to our home page where you will find a map. Click on your state, and then find the housing authority listing that is in your area. Once you click on that Housing Authority you will find all the information you need. Once you apply this will put your name on a waiting list. Just keep in mind some wait lists can take years so you may also want to ask them about other housing programs that may be available.

      I hope this helps you,
      Shari

    1. Henry,

You will need to check with the Housing Authority Agency that you applied through.
We are not affiliated with any Agency so we don’t have access to that information.

      Thanks,
      Shari

I read in another post from you that no one will help?
Have you contacted your local Housing Authority?

I wish you luck finding that job, don’t get discouraged.
      Shari

  8. I’m in Dept with Doctors & surgeons. They didn’t Help, made me Worse. I’m more so homeless Want to leave in thousand oak’s, California. I was on HUD in early 90s. Am I Still?

    1. Meisha,

I’m sorry to hear you are having such a hard time right now.
My suggestion is to contact the Housing Authority for that area at:
      County of Ventura

      Newbury Park, CA 91320
      Phone: (805) 480-9991.

    1. Natalie,
Depending on the area you applied in it can take many years for the wait list to have any movement.
Have you tried calling the Housing Authority/Agency you applied through?
Has any of your contact information changed from when you applied? It’s very important to keep your information current with them or you could loose your place on the list.
I would suggest you contact them to clarify if you are still on the list. They may or may not be able to give you this information.
There also may be emergency housing or other programs you could qualify for.
Please give them a call, they are there to help you!

      Hope this helps,
      Shari

    1. Crystal,

We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority so the email you received did not come from us.
You need to contact the agency you applied through to get them that information.
The email should have instructions on how to send it to them.
Please make sure you get it back to them quickly as it could delay your placement on the wait list.

      Thanks,
      Shari

    1. Eric,

You need to contact your Local Housing Authority.
They will help you sign up for Section 8 if the wait list is open, as well as other housing programs if you qualify for them.
If you are unsure who to contact, go to our home page where you will find a map. Click on your state. From there you will find a list of Housing Authorities with all the information you need.

If you are unsure or need assistance give them a call. They are there to help you.

      Thanks,
      Shari

    1. Renard,

You may want to contact the agency you applied through to see if they are asking for that.

  27. I already submitted proof of income. I called the office yesterday & left a message. Someone contacted me this morning around 8:45 a.m. They had seen that I gave proof of my income, & they asked who sent the message, & why since I already showed proof? They told me to be careful because there are a lot of scams out here. I don’t want to miss my opportunity for my family & I to have a comfortable place to live.
*My question(s) 1. Are you apart of the HOC Program? 2. Why doesn’t this email gave contact information? 3. If is does, I haven’t found it other than making a comment in this section 4. How are you linked to HOC?

    1. Terri,
The link from the email for verifying your income leads you to information about qualifying for Rental Assistance. It’s intended to supply you with the rules and income limits that the Housing Authorities use according to HUD.
No, we are not affiliated with any Housing Authority or program. Our site is just intended to provide information.
The person you spoke with is correct, be very careful as there are many scams out there unfortunately from people who want to take advantage of those in need.
We are not a scam, only here to help those who may not know if they qualify or how to apply.

I hope this answers your questions,
      Shari

  28. I got an email to post my income its765.00 a month from disability 190 in food stamps. asof 09292016 if I don’t find a place I will be homeless.

  29. I just filled out the application for section 8 in Hammond when the wait list was just open all they asked for was name and email I wanted to know was that all I had to fill out for the application

    1. Temeka,

Every Housing Authority has a different process as far as Wait List placement.
Some require proof of income when you complete the application and others have you provide that information when your name comes to the top of the list.
If you have not received a confirmation that you were placed on the list then I would double check with them and make sure they received everything they needed.
Most agencies will send you a letter or email with a confirmation number but not all.

      Hope this helps,
      Shari

  30. I’ve filled out an application over a year ago, got a response back from your office that my name would come up in your lottery, ” NOTHING YET “!
I’m still waiting, my contact information is as follows:

      1. Bobbi,

Again, we are NOT affiliated with any Housing Authority or program.
Each agency that offers the Section 8 program has their own Wait List.
You must contact the agency you applied through to get that information.
Many agencies will NOT give you that information because it is always changing per priority.
Please reach out to them, they may be able to help you.

        Thanks,
        Shari

    2. John,

We are not affiliated with any Housing Authority so the response you received was NOT from us.

      Thank you,
      Shari

    1. Robert,

If you are not on the list you may need to contact the agency you applied through to make sure they received your application. They may need more information from you.

I would suggest getting in touch with them to find out why you are not on their list.

      Thanks,
      Shari

    1. Michael,

Each Housing Authority has their own wait list. We are not affiliated with any program so I am not able to give you that information.
You will need to contact the agency you applied through to see if they will provide you with your spot.
Not all agencies will release that information because the list can change.
You may also want to look at the website for the Housing Authority you applied through.
Some will put wait list information there.

      Thanks,
      Shari

If you have a confirmation number then you are on the Wait List.
Please just make sure if you move or your contact information changes you keep them updated. If they can’t get a hold of you they will move on and you will loose your place on the list.

          I wish you the best~

The link from the email leads you to information about qualifying for Rental Assistance. It’s intended to supply you with the rules and income limits that the Housing Authorities use according to HUD.
If you feel that you qualify, then the next step is to contact your Local Housing Authority to apply.
You can find their contact information on our Home page. There you will find a map. Click on your state, this will take you to a list of Housing Authorities in your area.
We have supplied you with their contact information and application information.
